We are pleased to share the publication of Tales from Tribal Land: Stories from the Tribes of India, edited by Anoushka Jain (Enroute Indian History) and published by Rupa Publications India. Bringing together contributions from writers and researchers across the country, the volume presents a diverse collection of stories, folklore, traditions and cultural memories from India’s tribal communities. It offers an opportunity to engage with the richness and diversity of these traditions and the knowledge systems preserved through generations.
The volume includes a chapter by Khushi Kesari, Associate Lead, History Lab: Community, Heritage & Material Culture, ASIA, titled Whispers of Creation: Tales from the Land of Baiga. The chapter takes readers into the world of the Baiga community in Madhya Pradesh through a series of origin myths, creation stories, and legends passed down through oral traditions. It explores narratives and spiritual traditions within the community. Through these stories, the chapter brings together questions of belief, memory, nature, and cultural identity, while drawing attention to how knowledge continues to be transmitted through storytelling across generations.
The book is currently available at Bahrisons Booksellers and Jain Book Depot and will soon be available at additional bookstores and platforms across the country.
